Vortex Tone Generator
I don't know why, but the Vortex can produce a set of very high quality sine waves ranging from 125Hz to 14kHz.
- power up vortex while holding both 'A/B' and 'REGISTER/PRESET'.
- hit 'REGISTER/PRESET' again.
- turn preset knob until OB appears, (or OA).
- press 'REGISTER/PRESET' button.
- turn reg/pre knob to produce a series of tones.
- parameter knob varies the volume.
I guess it's to do with checking the correct functioning before letting it out of the factory. Anyway this is part of what is known as the 'diagnostic mode', which produces a number of much less useful effects.(Beware though, one setting will erase all your patches!)
If, when you get to instruction iii) on the list you select a different value from the preset knob you can access other functions:-
| Diagnostic Mode |
| reg/pre | function |
| 00 | Check preset knob | |
| 01 | Check footswitches | A/B+Reg/Pre to exit |
| 02 | Check pedal | |
| 03 | Check A/B relay | |
| 04 | Check LEDS | Turn preset knob |

| 07 | DRAM test | |
| 08 | ROM checksum test | |
| 09 | Exit Diagnostic mode | |

Tests that complete succesfully will display 'PA', otherwise a fail should display 'Er'. Thanks to Brad Knox for filling in the gaps.
